Fall Furnace Tune-Up Checklist: Get Your Chicagoland Home Ready for Heating Season

Every November, our phones light up with the same call: “I turned the heat on and nothing happened.” Almost every one of those breakdowns was preventable in September. Here's the fall checklist we recommend to every Chicagoland homeowner — the part you can do yourself, and the part that's worth having a professional handle before the first freeze.

What you can do yourself

1. Replace the furnace filter. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of furnace strain, poor airflow, and even overheating shutdowns. If you haven't changed it since spring, change it now — you can order the right filter from our shop and have it shipped to your door.

2. Test the heat before you need it. On the next cool morning, switch the thermostat to heat and set it 5 degrees above room temperature. The system should start smoothly, warm every room, and shut off without banging or rattling. A furnace that “smells like burning dust” for a few minutes on first startup is normal; anything electrical or metallic is not — see our guide to HVAC smells that are and aren't normal.

3. Clear the area around the furnace. Summer has a way of stacking boxes and paint cans around the mechanical room. Give the furnace three feet of clearance and never store anything flammable nearby.

4. Check your vents and returns. Walk the house and make sure supply registers and return grilles aren't blocked by furniture or rugs — blocked returns choke airflow just like a dirty filter.

5. Test carbon monoxide detectors. Fresh batteries, every fall, no exceptions. If your CO detector is more than 7 years old, replace the unit.

What a professional tune-up covers

A furnace tune-up is a deep inspection, not a filter swap. Our NATE-certified technicians inspect the heat exchanger for cracks (the failure that puts carbon monoxide in your air), clean the burners and flame sensor, test gas pressure and ignition, check the blower motor and electrical connections, verify safe venting, and measure how efficiently the system actually runs. The payoff: lower gas bills all winter, a longer equipment life, and — most importantly — catching the worn part in October instead of losing heat in January.

When to book it

September and early October are the sweet spot: cooling season is winding down, schedules are flexible, and there's time to order parts before you actually need heat. By mid-November we're deep in no-heat emergency calls throughout Hinsdale, South Holland, Orland Park, and the rest of the southwest suburbs — tune-up slots get scarce.

Or never think about it again

Our Comfort Plan members get their fall furnace tune-up (and spring AC tune-up) scheduled automatically, plus priority scheduling and guaranteed same-day service if something does break mid-winter. It's the closest thing to breakdown insurance a Chicagoland homeowner can buy.

Ready to get on the fall schedule? Book your furnace tune-up online or call (708) 671-0813. Family-owned and keeping the southwest suburbs warm since 1935.

The best service of its kind and I’ve had two or three others (one company sent men back 5 times and still couldn’t solve the AC problem).
