An air conditioner that won’t turn on at all is one of the most common summer service calls we get in Orland Park, Tinley Park and Palos Park. Before you call, here are seven things you can safely check yourself — a few you can fix in minutes.
1. Check the thermostat
Make sure it is set to COOL and the target temperature is below the current room temperature. If it uses batteries, replace them — dead thermostat batteries are a surprisingly common culprit.
2. Check the breaker
Look for a tripped breaker for the AC or air handler. Flip it fully off, then back on. If it trips again immediately, stop — that points to an electrical fault that needs a professional.
3. Check the condensate float switch
Many systems have a safety switch that cuts power when the condensate drain backs up. A clogged drain line will keep your AC from turning on until it is cleared.
4. Check the outdoor disconnect
There is usually a disconnect box near the outdoor unit. Make sure it is fully seated and switched on.
5. Replace a dirty filter
A severely clogged filter can shut the system down on a safety. Swap in a clean one.
6. Look and listen at the outdoor unit
If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit is silent, you may have a failed capacitor or contactor — common, repairable, but a job for a technician.
7. Still nothing? Call a pro
If your AC powers on but blows warm air instead, our guide on why your AC is not cooling may help. Otherwise our NATE-certified team offers fast AC repair in Tinley Park, Orland Park and the surrounding suburbs. Book service or call (708) 671-0813.
