Why HVAC Efficiency is important in the Chicago area?

Did you know the heating and cooling systems are one of the most used appliances in your home? Your refrigerator is the only other appliance that has a higher usage time than your furnace and air conditioner. It is understandable that you would want your heating and air conditioning units to work as efficiently as possible to help reduce costs and impact on the environment. Don’t know where to start regarding your HVAC efficiency and think you are overpaying for your electricity bill? Consult with a professional HVAC company like Always Ready Repair today.

What Makes A HVAC System More Efficient?

There are several factors that can lead to better efficiency in your heating and cooling systems. Each of these factors can make a significant difference in how your heating and cooling units perform and how much it costs to operate them at a comfortable temperature. Due to having hot summers and cold winters in the Midwest, it is very important to select a proper HVAC unit to suit these conditions. In doing so, you can save on your electricity bill and ensure comfortable cooling and heating all year long. Listed below are terms to consider to assist you in making your choice.

SEER and EER

SEER rating reflects overall system efficiency on a seasonal basis. EER reflects the system's energy efficiency at one specific operating condition. Both SEER and EER ratings are useful when choosing products, but the same rating must be used for comparisons.

SEER Rating - Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) is a rating given to whole house air conditioning systems on their performance. Higher SEER numbers indicate top performance with lower energy consumption. The SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit's SEER rating, the more energy efficient it is. The maximum SEER is 42 (as of 2019). A typical EER rating for residential central cooling units = 0.875 × SEER. Your SEER rating will always have a higher value than your EER rating, although it is for the same equipment.

EER - The energy efficiency ratio of a particular cooling device is the ratio of output cooling energy (in BTU/hr) to input electrical energy (in Watts) at a given operating point. EER is generally calculated by using a 95 °F outside temperature and an inside temperature of 80°F. While calculating the EER, there will be 50% relative humidity.

Window unit air conditioners only have an EER rating. Again, the higher the number the more efficiently the unit works. It should be noted that window unit air conditioners often do not rank half as high as a whole-house unit in regards to energy efficiency.

Maintenance on HVAC Units

Any type of appliance or machinery that is constantly used needs proper maintenance. Without regular maintenance, your heating and cooling systems will not operate at their peak performance.

Regular maintenance is required on furnaces, air conditioners, and window air conditioning units as well. When you have the filters changed and worn parts replaced, you help reduce energy consumption because the unit does not have to work as hard. By doing this, you help ensure that during the coldest nights and hottest days, your heating and cooling units will continue to work.

Age of Heating and Cooling Units

The age of your heating and cooling units can have an impact on their efficiency. Newer technologies have made heating and cooling units much more efficient. If your units are seven years or older, it may be time to consider a new unit with advanced technologies.
